Compressed Work Week (CWW)
A CWW is an arrangement whereby employees work longer shifts in exchange for a reduction in the number of working days in their work cycle.  Its stated objective is to allow the compression or extension of the work week to the mutual benefit of the employer and employees, while maintaining the department’s ability to operate effectively.   This is beneficial for employees in terms of additional days off work and reduced commuting time, whereas employers can extend their daily operating hours, with less need to resort to overtime.  This is often seen as an innovative solution to balancing work and personal life.  Implementation of a CWW must also be done in accordance with the provisions of the relevant collective agreement.

COMPRESSED WORK WEEK ARRANGEMENTS (FXT)
10.1 It is understood that other arrangements regarding hours of work and overtime may be entered into between the parties on a local or ministry level with respect to variable work days or variable work weeks. The model agreement with respect to compressed work week arrangements is set out below (see your Collective Agreement).

Typically, the Steward in the area works with their management and the members to help draft a CWW Agreement based upon the Model CWW Agreement in Article 10 of our Collective Agreement.  Once a draft CWW Agreement is completed that is acceptable to the members and management in the area it goes to the Local President for approval.  Once it has been reviewed and signed it typically goes to the President of OPSEU for their signature.  Management's level of approval for this agreement is up to them.
