2011 SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE TO LOCAL 506 MEMBERS
CVSA 2011 Academic Scholarship - Application deadline April 30, 2011
The Scholarship provides two $1000 grants to graduating high school seniors whose parent or legal guardian is a good standing member of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.
OPSEU - Curt Bishop Scholarship Fund - Application deadline August 1st every year
OPSEU offers an annual $1,000 scholarship to promote health and safety in the workplace in memory of Curt Bishop, a member-activist who promoted worker safety for more than 20 years. Open to dependents of OPSEU members in good standing who are studying at a publicly funded, publicly run post-secondary institution in Ontario.
OPSEU - Global Scholarship - Application deadline - June 15th every year
This fund offers children, foster children or wards of OPSEU members in good standing an opportunity to win a $1,000 scholarship towards post-secondary education in a publicly-funded Canadian university or college.
OPSEU - Larry Cripps Scholarship Fund - Application deadline June 15th every year
This annual bursary/scholarship of $2,000 is awarded in the memory of Brother Larry Cripps, a Correctional Officer and longtime union activist who died in 2004. Open to dependents of OPSEU members in good standing who are studying at a publicly-funded, publicly-run post-secondary institution in Ontario. To receive the scholarship, the student must be confirmed as enrolled in either a Police Foundations Course or a Law and Security/Corrections course.
OPSEU - HPD Scholarship Funds - 1 per Region - Application deadline September 1st
The Hospital Professionals Division offers seven scholarships (one per region) annually to students who are entering professions within the Professional Program. The fund offers OPSEU members or their dependents an opportunity to win a $750 scholarship toward post-secondary education at a publicly funded recognized Canadian university or college. To receive the scholarship, the student must be confirmed as enrolled in a Hospital Professional program.
OPSEU - Carol McGregor Scholarship - Application deadline September 15th
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union offers an annual scholarship of $3,000 in the memory of Carol McGregor, a longtime union activist on disability rights issues, who died in 2006. This scholarship is open to children of OPSEU members. The recipient must have a visible or invisible disability and be pursuing post-secondary education at a publicly-funded university, community college or trades program. Extra consideration will be given to students who have participated in a collective action or community organizing on disability or human rights issues.
OFL Labour Honour Roll Scholarships
The OFL awards two scholarships worth $2,000 each to a member or the child of a member of a local union affiliated to the OFL. The scholarships are awarded in honour of distinguished trade union activists selected by representatives of the OFL Executive Board. *2011 details not available at the time of this link being created.
National Union (NUPGE) 2011 Scholarship Program - Application deadlines June 30, 2011
The Tommy Douglas Scholarship for $1,500 is open to all students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2011-2012 and who are the children of, or foster children of, a NUPGE member.
The Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship for $1,500 is open to all students with disabilities who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2010-2011 and who are the children of, or foster children of, a member of the National Union of Public and General Employees.
The Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians for $1,500 is open to all Aboriginal Canadian students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2010-2011 and who are the children of, or foster children of a NUPGE member.
The Scholarship for Visible Minorities for $1,500 is open to all visible minority students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education full-time in 2010-2011 and who are the children of, or foster children of a NUPGE member.
Workers Health and Safety Centre - Wally Majesky Labour Studies Bursaries
WHSC jointly sponsors a total of $4,000 in bursaries annually. These bursaries are available at, and administered by, the following publicly-funded Ontario colleges and universities: Brock University, Laurentian University, Mohawk College, McMaster University and University of Windsor. International Labour News Audiocast Starting Up February 1st, 2010. A weekly presentation of international labour news is being organized on the Internet. The audiocast - called Solidarity News - will be available on RadioLabour.net every Monday morning. Solidarity News will focus on union and workers' activities and issues from around the world with special emphasis on emerging market and developing countries. RadioLabour reporters will provide regular weekly presentations, but a special feature of the audiocast will be reports from unionists who want to report on particular events or publicize an activity of their organization. Scripts of the audiocasts will be available as aids for unionists who want to learn the use of English as an additional language in the international labour movement.
